Flybe begins accepting bookings for Dundee-Amsterdam flights again

Airline Flybe has started accepting bookings from Dundee to Amsterdam again.

Passengers had been taken to Edinburgh Airport by bus to catch flights they expected to depart from Dundee, leading to fears Dundee’s only international route was about to be scrapped.

However, Flybe is once again allowing passengers to book seats on flights to Schiphol Airport from Dundee.

No flights are listed as available in November but the company’s website says flights will resume on December 1.

Customers who contacted customer services were told they would be flying from Dundee, rather than being bussed to Edinburgh.

A Flybe spokeswoman refused to confirm the direct flights would be returning but said it is hoped the situation will be resolved as quickly as possible.

She said: “As a result of an ongoing review of operations, Flybe has taken the decision to temporarily operate the above route via Edinburgh Airport with a coach connection to and from Dundee.

“Flybe is committed to working with Dundee Airport to resolve this as quickly as possible and sincerely apologises to customers for any inconvenience resulting from this disruption. “

One senior political source has said the flights will be scrapped entirely due to safety fears over the number of small aircraft in the skies. However, Flybe has strongly rejected this.

The return of direct flights to Amsterdam would provide a welcome fillip to the airport after it emerged flights to and from Jersey are to stop after 25 years.

The flights, operated by Airways Holidays, operated between May and September each year.

Robert Mackenzie, managing director of C.I. Travel Group, who own Airways, said the flights are no longer viable.

He said: “We have made the decision to end flights between Dundee and Jersey.

“We have been the charter of the aircraft and operator of the route for many years and unfortunately we are at the point where the availability of aircraft and the cost of using those aircraft is now no longer feasible.

“We have been working very hard with Dundee Airport and Ramsay Travel, our flight partner, to try and find a solution but regrettably we have not been able to keep it.

While the route will not return this year, the flight boss added: “When a route disappears it’s quite difficult to see it returning — but we have not completely closed the door on it.”

Ramsay World Travel has booked flights between Dundee and Jersey for 24 years.

The travel firm’s managing director Colin Ramsay, said: “Unfortunately Airways have now taken the route away. It was their project and their flight.”

The travel agent has put contingency plans in place for booked flights from next May, laying on coaches from Dundee and Perth to Edinburgh from which travellers will then continue their journey.
