Dundee played host to the finale of the national Festival of Architecture at the weekend, with its own showcase event.

The West Ward Works was a hub of activity as the Dundee Festival of Architecture: A 2016 Showcase opened to the public.

It caps off one of the key events in Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design.

Dundee’s Light Night celebrations heralded the Festival of Architecture’s finale and brought the city to life, with the still under-construction V&A lit up with projections.

The Dundee Festival of Architecture’s central attraction was Prospect North, first shown at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2016.

The immersive exhibition uses cutting-edge augmented and virtual reality, focusing on how architecture, design and technology can transform communities across Scotland.

A map of Scotland and the Arctic north, made up of individual wooden posts, incorporates video from community projects across the country showing collaborative work between architects and local people.

Jim MacDonald, chief executive of Architecture and Design Scotland, one of the partners behind the event, said he hoped visitors were inspired by the showcase.

He said: “2016 has been a year to celebrate of Scotland’s architecture and places. We were delighted to be able to bring the Prospect North exhibition to Dundee and also provide a showcase of the hugely varied and rich content that has been on show throughout Scotland as part of the Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design and the Festival of Architecture 2016.

“We hope visitors come away inspired by what they saw and continue to explore their own places and the architecture around them.”

The showcase also brought together exhibitions such as Best of the Best, the Festival of Architecture’s Adventures in Space and an architectural crazy golf course, created by the Dundee Institute of Architects.

More information can be found on the Architecture and Design Scotland (ADS) website.

Dundee Festival of Architecture has been curated by ADS, under their Say Hello to Architecture banner, and is part of the Festival of Architecture 2016 and the Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design.

Partners include the Dundee Institute of Architects, Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland, TAYplan, Nicoll Russell Studios and Children’s Parliament.
