Dundee Airport’s fire rescue team help to clean up Riverside Nature Park

Dundee Airport's fire rescue team are using an ATV to collect rubbish from the bay.

Riverside Nature Park has been boosted by a successful partnership aimed at cleaning up Invergowrie Bay.

In recent times, the bay has been left looking filthy and neglected due to various items regularly washing up on its shores.

However, a combined effort between Friends of Riverside Nature Park, Dundee City Council, and Dundee Airport, has seen items such as old tyres, rusty shopping trolleys, and discarded wheelie bins collected for disposal.

The bay is overlooked by a bird hide at the nature park and provides food and roosting conditions for thousands of migrating birds in the winter.

It is enjoyed by visitors across Scotland but the condition of the area had been spoiling the view, and therefore damaging its reputation as a tourist attraction.

The airport fire service team regularly uses the bay for training purposes using its eight-wheel all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and has recently been collecting the rubbish, which is swept in to the area because of the tide.

The team also uses the bay for access to the approach path to the airport in case of an incident, and cleaning up the area improves the safety for them to do so.

West End Councillor Fraser Macpherson said that the positive outcome is an example of what can be achieved by cooperation.

He said: “We’re very grateful to the fire team at the airport for using their expertise and all-terrain vehicle to help keep the river near Riverside Nature Park and Invergowrie Bay clear of debris.

“It is a good example of groups coming together to cooperate and help solve a problem in our area.

“The Friends of Riverside Nature Park also organise regular litter picks in the Nature Park as well and all this helps to keep the area beautiful and a real resource for local residents.”

Dundee City Council has been promoting the Take Pride in your City campaign, which encourages residents to take pride in Dundee by helping to make a difference in their own neighbourhoods, parks and open spaces.

It aims to reduce the amount of dog fouling, litter, fly-tipping and discarded chewing gum.
