Consultation on proposed boundary changes to take place in Dundee

Dundonians will be given the chance to have their say on controversial proposals to redraw Scotland’s Westminster constituencies.

Plans unveiled in October would see the number of MPs in Scotland cut from 59 to 53.

Tuesday’s event takes place at City Chambers from 10am.

If the changes go ahead then a new constituency of Angus Glens and Dundee East would be created while the current Dundee West would become Dundee Burgh.

Initial proposals published by the Boundary Commission for Scotland see just three seats unchanged: the two protected islands constituencies and East Lothian.

SNP Westminster leader Angus Robertson has said the plans are “unacceptable”.

Lord Matthews, deputy chair of the Boundary Commission for Scotland, said: “The public hearing in Dundee is a crucial part of our public consultation process.

“With a number of boundary changes proposed, we look forward to the public engaging with the Commission on November 29.

“We also welcome comments on any of our proposals at any of our hearings and will reflect on responses to the consultation and make changes if needed, where the legislation allows us to do so.”

The total number of constituencies across the UK is to be reduced from 650 to 600.

Public consultation on the proposals will end in January.

The constituencies will have to be agreed by Parliament in time for the 2020 General Election.

Each constituency will have an electorate of around 74,769 voters, plus of minus five per cent.
