Warning to cat owners after six ‘anti-freeze poisonings’ in Kirkton area of Dundee

PDSA say there have been 6 poisonings in the last 18 months in Kirkton
PDSA say there have been 6 poisonings in the last 18 months in Kirkton

A family have issued a warning to cat owners after their beloved pet died from drinking anti-freeze in Kirkton, Dundee, one of six cases in the last 18 months.

An individual, who does not wish to be named, said he needed to put down his pet after it ingested anti-freeze, causing its kidneys to fail.

He says he received a phone call from the PDSA shortly after to inform him that there had been six other similar cases in the area.

When contacted, the PDSA said that two of the cases have been in the last week.

The man posted online: “I feel this should be brought to the attention of Cat Owners in the Kirkton Area.

“I have just had to put my 2-year-old boy to sleep as his kidneys failed. This was due to ingesting anti-freeze. I personally put it down to him maybe licking up overspill from a car.

“I have however today had a call from the PDSA to state he is in fact the sixth cat from my local area to be brought into the surgery with this issue.

“I don’t know if it’s due to someone maybe storing anti-freeze and it leaking or if this is in fact an act of malice.

“I’m just bringing this to your attention as I wouldn’t wish anyone to lose there beloved pet.

“I hope it’s not a malicious act. So so sad if it is. It’s bad enough he’s gone but to think it was done on purpose is a killer.”

He said he is reporting it to the SSPCA to ensure it is logged.

The PDSA said: “If you suspect your pet has eaten a toxic substance, you should contact your vet immediately for advice. If you suspect the poisoning may be malicious, report this to the SSPCA and the police.”
