Drivers urged to be patient over Riverside traffic jams

Traffic can be bumper to bumper on Riverside Drive at rush hour.
Traffic can be bumper to bumper on Riverside Drive at rush hour.

Drivers caught up in delays on Dundee’s Riverside Drive have been urged to be patient with the city centre roadworks causing the traffic jams.

Resurfacing work in the Nethergate and additional traffic lights on Perth Road have caused lengthy tailbacks in the city centre.

The problem was exacerbated on Monday night when a breakdown on the Tay Road Bridge caused more severe delays.

Some frustrated motorists found themselves stuck in traffic for 20 minutes as they drove west along Riverside Drive.

One driver said traffic had come to an almost complete halt between Tesco Riverside and Slessor Gardens.

The motorist said: “It is pretty frustrating – cars were trying to come out of Tesco but then just hitting gridlock.

“The traffic was only inching forward. There are loads of traffic lights and then you get taxis trying to leave the railway station and even more traffic lights at the V&A.”

Graeme Stephen, chairman of the Dundee Taxi Association, said the work will benefit drivers in the long-run.

He said: “It was not too bad when I went through in the morning to get to the railway station. At the end of the day they’ve got to get things done.”

West End councillor Fraser Macpherson said constituents have contacted him about delays on Riverside Drive and Hawkhill but he believes the problems should be resolved by the end of next week.

He said: “There’s no doubt that at the moment things are particularly challenging because of the roadworks taking place between the DCA and the Marketgait.

“That clearly is having an effect and can be frustrating for drivers, although for once it is being done for a positive reasons as the resurfacing work is long overdue.”

Mr Macpherson added: “We are in the second of a three week-programme so hopefully by the end of next Friday we will have returned to normal. It should not be a permanent problem.”

A Dundee City Council spokesman said: “We constantly monitor the road network and we make every effort to keep the traffic flowing.”
