A Dundee supermarket has slapped security tags on £2.89 bottles of shower gel after desperate Dundonians resorted to stealing everyday essentials.
The Co-op on Stobswell’s Albert Street has applied electronic security devices to Lynx shower gel in an attempt to combat shoplifting.
The store has applied devices, which are activated if taken outside the store, to jars of coffee and other small ticket items.
The move has been branded “tragic” by charity workers and anti poverty campaigners.
Mike Strachan, from charity Dundee The Caring City, said he wasn’t surprised some people are resorting to such measures.
Mike said: “It’s a sign of how desperate things are becoming. It’s a sad situation when people feel they have to steal goods just to keep clean.”
