Big-haired pop legend Leo Sayer feels like singing Hamish at Tannadice

Pop star Leo Sayer wants to sing Michael Marra’s tribute to Dundee United legend Hamish McAlpine on the pitch at Tannadice.

Marra’s song Hamish was recorded for McAlpine’s testimonial in 1983 and Leo fell in love with it with it after becoming friends with the singer/songwriter.

Leo recorded his own version of the Dundee United anthem which was lost for more than 20 years until Marra’s son dug one out while tidying up.

“It’s a wonderful example of worlds colliding and beautiful poetry,” he said.

“And the chorus, ‘Hamish kicks young men’s dreams into a burning flame’ – what a line!”

Next on Leo’s list is to perform the song at Tannadice.

“Maybe next summer?” he said.

“Let me see if I can arrange something with the football club.

“That would just be epic.”

Leo gave permission for his recording to be used on a fundraising album with all profits from sales directed towards youth and community projects at Tannadice.

United supporters have never forgotten Leo’s generosity and the fact he recorded the song remains a popular trivia question to this day.

Dundee United previously said they would be “delighted” to arrange a performance at Tannadice.

McAlpine also said he was already warming up his vocal chords to sing the song with him on the pitch.

Leo is back in the UK on tour with a date this Saturday at Perth Concert Hall.

He will be performing his greatest hits including One Man Band, You Make Me Feel Like Dancing, Thunder In My Heart and When I Need You.

With 16 hit albums and 26 hit singles to his credit, the Grammy award winning singer is one of the most successful acts the UK has ever produced and remains hugely popular worldwide.

His first seven hit singles in the United Kingdom all reached the Top 10 – a feat first registered by his first manager, Adam Faith.

Leo’s songs have been sung by other notable artists, including Cliff Richard, Roger Daltrey and Phil Collins.

Tickets for Leo’s Perth show are on sale now.
