Dundee day care centre hopes to build new HQ

Joyce McIntosh believes the proposed new building will be a boost for the whole area.
Joyce McIntosh believes the proposed new building will be a boost for the whole area.

A Dundee day care centre hopes to demolish its headquarters and create a new two storey building on the same site.

Mid-Lin Day Care, based in Dundee’s Linlathen area, has had “informal” discussions with Dundee City Council to see if their existing building can be purchased through community empowerment legislation.

According to Mid-Lin chair, Joyce McIntosh, the proposed new facility will “provide a building that could serve multiple functions within the Linlathen, Mid-Craigie and wider Dundee communities”.

The group say due to the “increased needs of older people”, their current premises has become unsuitable.

It’s hoped, if the proposals are backed, the new two-storey building will act as a space where the surrounding communities can meet.

Ms McIntosh, chairperson of the Mid-Lin Day Care Board, said: “This would be wonderful and good for the community.

“We offer services like adult learning and breakfast clubs and we can house all of these things in this building.

“The current building is not conducive for our needs.

“We have already met with someone from the council and from the Lottery and they have given us a lot of guidance.

“One of the first things we need to do is call out to people in the community and the families of people who attend Mid-Lin.

“It’s quite exciting.”

To make people aware of the plans, Mid-Lin is hosting an open evening event on Tuesday June 13 and Wednesday June 21.

Both events begin at 7pm.

A power-point display will be on offer to show the kind of ventures the new centre will offer.

Ms McIntosh explained: “What we need to do is engage with the community to make this a multi purpose building where people are stakeholders and have a vested interest in the building.

“We want to encourage community spirit in Mid Craigie.”

Mid-Lin Day Care Centre has recently been announced as one of the recipients of funding from new Dundee restaurant The Boozy Cow.
