Better signs sought for Perth Road during closure

Carriageway resurfacing works are underway for the next four weeks on Perth Road.
Carriageway resurfacing works are underway for the next four weeks on Perth Road.

More signs advising Perth Road visitors businesses are open as usual while the carriageway is closed are urgently needed, according to a city councillor.

The Courier reported traders are already feeling the effects of the complete shutdown of the road, which has instantly reduced footfall in the popular West End shopping area.

Lib Dem councillor Fraser Macpherson has written to the council demanding more signage for the area, detailing business continuing as normal while the closures are in place.

The West End representative said the current sign, which is situated where the road is closed off at Roseangle, was wholly “inadequate”.

He said: “What is very clear is that there is totally inadequate promotion of the fact that the businesses are open as usual.

“The signage to that effect at the Roseangle junction is adequate but if anyone was coming to visit a shop from either Riverside Drive to the south or from the west – and therefore coming down Windsor Street as Perth Road at Sinderins is closed – all the driver is met with are “road closed” signs and absolutely nothing to indicate that businesses are open as usual.

“We have a superb range of shops and local businesses in Perth Road and the message has to be crystal clear that local businesses are unaffected by the road resurfacing and open as usual.

“I have asked for the signage to be improved as a matter of urgency.”

Perth Road will be closed for four weeks while resurfacing works are conducted.

The carriageway will be closed to vehicles from Hawkhill to the junction at Roseangle.

Meanwhile, Dundee City Council confirmed the materials used in the resurfacing project will not be the same used further up the road close to Harris Academy and other areas of the town, which have been plagued by dust following recent roadworks.
