Tayside to be battered by thunderstorms, flooding and heavy rain

Storms are forecast.
Storms are forecast.

Thunder, heavy rain and flooding is forecast to batter Tayside and Fife tomorrow.

A yellow warning of rain, which could turn to hail in places, has been placed across Courier Country and the neighbouring Grampian region by the Met Office.

The forecaster said “short-lived” flooding could hit local roads as a downpour of rain batters parts the East Coast from 11am until 6pm on Thursday.

Thunder, lightning and heavy rain is due to spread from Fife, north to Dundee and into Angus.

The thundery weather may also hit Perth and Kinross, with only the West Coast of Scotland expected to miss out on the rain.

However temperatures could still reach highs of between 20C and 22C, with sunshine also expected before and after the downpour.

Met Office meteorologist Stuart Brooks said: “The further north you go across the north-east the worse the showers are. There is a greater chance of longer, heavier showers in the north. That is where the greater chance of surface water flooding is.

“Further south towards Fife, we still expect some heavy showers to be moving with some thunder possible too. The further south you go the quicker these are moving through.

“But even in Dundee or Fife expect to see some possibly heavy, thundery showers at times.”

He added: “It should be reasonably warm and sunshine is still expected in between. It is not going to be consistent rain by any means. It is the warmth that is actually kicking off the heavier showers.

“The further north you go, the showers are just moving a bit slower. Friday and Saturday both look like showery days too. There is a chance of thunder on Saturday as well.”
