Council chiefs urged to follow other cities’ lead with free parking on Sundays in lead-up to Christmas

West End councillor Fraser Macpherson has called on Dundee City Council to organise free parking Sundays to boost Christmas shopping.

Mr Macpherson said two free days in the lead-up to Christmas would help city traders compete with those in other cities, where free parking days are already established.

He said: “Edinburgh is already offering free parking on a Sunday – it appears our council doesn’t get it – that we have to compete with other Scottish cities.

“Perth also has free parking concessions in the run up to Christmas.

“Aberdeen City Council is to consider free parking on Sundays and not charging drivers for the first 30 minutes to encourage people back into their city centre.”

Councillor Macpherson contacted the council’s director of city development about the parking suggestion.

He was told: “The parking charge regime for Dundee City Centre has for a long time included charging on Sundays.

“We allow free parking until 1pm to facilitate city centre church attendance and this also allows people to visit the shops during the first one to two hours of trading for free.

“The whole strategy behind city centre parking charging is to ensure both road safety, good traffic management and demand management for streets and areas that are obviously of high demand and must remain accessible and attractive.

“The demand for parking in Dundee city centre is still significant and the car parks generate a surplus that allows us to run an enforcement service that does not have a financial impact on other council services.”
