A £2 million revamp of Dundee Science Centre is getting under way.

The major development will take seven months and will see the centre’s upper floor space double in size.

Perhaps the highlight of the development will be a new 80-seater complex designed to host seminars and live shows.

Also part of the new development will be a “Medical Marvels” exhibition which will deliver an interactive visitor experience featuring state-of-the-art technologies and medical advancements within areas such as keyhole surgery, anatomy and medical imaging.

The project was kick-started by an £850,000 grant by the Wellcome Trust.

Funding has also been received from the Scottish Government, Dundee City Council, Scottish Enterprise and the Robertson Trust.

Dundee Science Centre CEO Linda Leuchars said: “This is an extremely exciting time in Dundee Science Centre’s evolution and we are thrilled to have reached this milestone.

“It is particularly fitting that we will be celebrating local science which is making a global impact, while bringing a diverse cross-spectrum of people together to enjoy science.

“As a registered independent charity, we are of course delighted to have achieved our ambitious fundraising targets and would like to thank each and every one of our funders and supporters.

“Our exciting new facilities will allow us to welcome an increased number of both public and school visits. We will of course continue to welcome visitors and deliver an active programme of exhibitions, shows and special events throughout the construction period and look forward to seeing the transformation take shape.”

Dundee City Council leader John Alexander said: “I have been very impressed by the work of the science centre in reinvigorating itself, centred around the ambitious expansion plans.

“The centre is already a huge asset to the city but this state of the art, cutting edge expansion will secure its future and its place as a city destination for many years to come.”

Dundee Science Centre will remain open to visitors throughout the works, with the new space and exhibition due to open to the public in Spring 2018.
