Traffic lights in Dundee city centre went down and shops were apparently forced to close following a power cut on Wednesday morning.

A total of 279 properties in the DD1 area have been hit by the outage with the Overgate shopping centre among the places affected.

Several of the centre’s shops – Sports Direct, Next, Argos and H&M – were evacuated following the power cut.

The power outage was reported to Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) at 10.45am.

A spokeswoman for the firm said: “This one want off at 10.45am, it is affecting 279 properties, mostly in central Dundee.

“Engineers are on site and have been for around an hour now. We are awaiting feedback on what they have uncovered.

“What they do is go to local substations an check if it is a fuse that’s blown. At this stage we are still awaiting feedback from them.”

Electricity restoration is expected at 1pm.

Malcolm Angus, Overgate Centre manager, said: “There was a power failure within parts of Dundee City Centre, this affected Sports Direct, Next, Argos and H&M who all evacuated.

“The power failure was not related to Overgate directly although we were in contact with Scottish Power to find out the cause as parts of Nethergate and the High Street were also in darkness.

“The contractor has now repaired the issue and the power has returned.”

Traffic lights across the city centre also went down but are back up and running now, Dundee City Council has confirmed.

The Overgate has been approached for comment.
