A Dundee community group is gearing up to raise up to £80,000 for the second phase of its park regeneration project.

Fintry Community Council has transformed neglected land in Fintry’s Powrie Park into a £100,000 modern play area with state-of-the-art equipment.

Early next year, the group plans to ask local businesses to help fund further improvement works, such as creating more car parking spaces and repairing the flowerbeds.

Ron Neave, chairman of Fintry Community Council, said: “We have almost completed the park.

“Shortly we’ll be creating a time capsule and putting in some graffiti art, which should hopefully happen some time this month.

“After New Year, we will move on to the second phase, which is putting the finishing touches.

“All the flower beds, on the side near the shops, will need to be repaired and maybe demolished altogether. We’d need to out in some more car parking spaces too.

“But first we have to consult with the local shops and the community too – we need to make sure they’d be happy with our plans.

“We’ll also need a fair bit of money – we haven’t got costings yet, but it may be in the region of £70,000 to £80,000.

“That may take a while to raise. Once we have exact quotes, we’ll need to sit down with local businesses  and see if they would be willing to support the project.”

The new Powrie Park officially opened with fanfare  in April, after three years of intensive fundraising by Fintry Community Council and Finmill Safety Panel.

Around 1000 people turned out for the opening, enjoying  a day of food, music, games and kids’ rides.

The future of the park had been thrown into jeopardy after being targeted by vandals twice, causing over £1000 worth of damage.

Ron said that thankfully, there have been no further incidents since the official opening – and he hopes it will remain that way.
