A driver ploughed a car into a lamppost, knocking it on to a nearby house, while trying to escape police in Dundee.

The shocked homeowners said they were alerted to a loud bang just after 8pm on Thursday.

The driver of a silver Volkswagen Golf apparently lost control before colliding with the lamppost in Strathmartine Road.

Despite their property sustaining damage, the homeowners were still able to carry on with a party planned for Friday and thanked the city council for reacting quickly and removing the obstruction from their driveway.

The cover from the top of the lamp missed one of the homeowners’ cars by inches.

One of the residents, who did not wish to be named, said: “A vehicle lost control while driving, I think while being pursued by police cars, and smashed into a lamppost right outside our house.

“The driver knocked over the lamppost, which then crashed into the front of our house.

“It has knocked some of the guttering off the front, which crashed down on to the driveway and has caused a bit of damage to the front as well, leaving it exposed.

“It was absolutely lashing with rain when the whole thing happened and I think police were in pursuit of the man who was driving the car.

“It was my wife’s 60th birthday on Friday, and it would have taken a lot more than a bashed bit of guttering to put an end to the celebrations.”

He continued: “Full credit to the council, they were up to ours pretty promptly to remove the lamppost and fix the damage to the pavement.

“By the time I went to bed, which was at around midnight once the excitement had died down, they had removed and fixed what needed to be done, which is pretty remarkable really.”

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “Police Scotland is carrying out enquiries after road traffic incident whereby a vehicle made off from officers and collided with a lamppost at Strathmartine Road, Dundee, on Thursday evening.

“Officers are keen to trace the occupants of the car and anyone with any information is asked to contact Tayside Division on 101 quoting reference CR/27324/17.”
