Archie McGowan.
Archie McGowan.

A former DC Thomson transport manager and army veteran has died aged 88.

Archie McGowan, who worked for the company for more than 40 years, died peacefully at Lisden Nursing Home.

He is survived by his wife Janette, sons Jack and David, daughter Susan and grandchildren Colin and Rhona.

Susan paid tribute to the  keen golfer and cyclist.

She said: “He was personable, sociable and always willing to help others.

“This included a steady stream of employees seeking advice about their cars.

“In addition to managing the large fleet of vans, cars and lorries, he also had to deal with accident repairs.”

Outside work, she said her father’s interests included cycling, golf and caravaning. He was a member of the Forfarshire Cycling Club and took part in races.

“He kept this going for many years and at the age of 57, took part in a 100-mile charity event,” she added.

“He was also a keen golfer and a member of Kirriemuir Golf Club for many years, regularly organising golf trips for his department.”

Mr McGowan was born on February 3, 1929.

After leaving school he started an apprenticeship as a mechanic at Lamb’s garage in Dundee.

This was interrupted in 1950 when he was called up for national service in Gibraltar, followed by several years in the Territorial Army.

He joined DC Thomson in 1953 as a mechanic in the Blinshall Street garage.

After five years he was asked to take over the garage stores. He subsequently moved to the transport office as assistant manager.

He became transport manager in 1989, before retiring in 1994.

Mr McGowan’s funeral will take place on Tuesday January 23 at 11.30am at Friockheim Crematorium.
