Plans for second branch of Papa John’s in Dundee

An American pizza chain is set to serve up its second eatery in Dundee — less than two years after opening its first in the city.

Papa John’s has submitted proposals to the city council’s planning department outlining its intentions to install signage at a site on West Marketgait in the city centre.

The store will be run by 32-year-old franchisee Sam Foster, who opened Dundee’s first Papa John’s pizzeria in September 2016.

Sam, who previously worked for the RAF at Leuchars, confirmed he was set to operate the store in tandem with the branch occupying one of the units in Arbroath Road, next to Aldi.

While no fixed opening date has been set yet, Sam said he aims to have the takeaway up and running within the next few months.

Sam, whose brother, Dave, runs a Papa John’s franchise in Cheshire and whose father was also in the pizza trade, said the city centre was the “next step” in his plan to introduce eateries across the area.

He said: “Business has been really good to the point that the Arbroath Road location has been getting stretched because of the demand from elsewhere in the city.

“This new opening will cover the West End as well as the city centre — and then everything will be perfect.”

Papa John’s was founded in 1984 by businessman John Schnatter in Indiana in the US and it arrived in the UK in 2001. Since then, the firm has expanded to 250 locations, including more than 20 in Scotland.
