Man left student in tears after robbing him on night out

Dundee Sheriff Court.
Dundee Sheriff Court.

A 36-year-old man has been jailed for robbing a student who was walking home from a night out in Dundee.

William O’Neill admitted assaulting Ibrahim Ahmad and threatening to stab him on January 21 2017.

O’Neill told the 20-year-old he would kill him, demanded money from him and forced him to withdraw cash from a bank machine.

He robbed his victim of £200, a mobile phone, an ID card, a bank card and a driving licence.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard the student was left distressed and crying after his ordeal.

The offences happened at Bell Street, Meadowside, Panmure Street, Murraygate and Victoria Road.

Mr Ahmad had been on a night out at Dundee University Students’ Union and had lost his friends.

He bumped into O’Neill as he was making his way home.

The court was told the encounter was friendly at first, but a short time later and for “no reason”, the accused became aggressive.

O’Neill, of Dens Road, Dundee then threatened to stab Mr Ahmad and made him hand over his possessions.

O’Neill’s defence solicitor said his client understood he would receive a custodial sentence and wanted to use the time in prison to address his alcohol issues.

Sheriff Tom Hughes jailed him for two years and nine months, telling him: “You have been involved in a very nasty incident, which has caused a lot of distress to the victim.

“This can’t be tolerated by the courts.”
