‘Sinking’ road raises fears Nethergate is set for more closure disruption

Locals have a sinking feeling after a busy road in Dundee started to show signs of damage less than a year after it was closed for repairs.

Setts on Perth Road opposite Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA) in the city’s Nethergate have sunk into the road surface having been repaired last February.

The work, carried out by the Dundee Roads Maintenance Partnership on behalf of the city council, saw the main thoroughfare closed for three weeks causing disruption for local residents and businesses.

Now with the surface again appearing uneven, West End Liberal Democrat councillor Fraser Macpherson is worried about any potential repeat.

He said: “It is very concerning that, so soon after this work being completed, the road brickwork is uneven, exactly the issue with the road prior to the 2017 work.

“It took three weeks last time to fix the road so if the road is to be closed again to fix it then it will cause a lot of disruption.

“I have had many local residents contact me about this issue.

“It’s one of the busiest routes in the city and the detour drivers have to take if it is closed is quite a hassle.”

The call comes shortly after similar concerns were raised over the quality of pothole repairs in the city with Broughty Ferry councillor Craig Duncan urging maintenance chiefs to avoid being “penny wise but pound foolish”.

Mr Macpherson, though recognising that the issue at the Nethergate differs from those previously highlighted, said the work needs to be rectified “urgently”.

He said: “It must have cost a lot to repair as it involved the removal of the bricks and to put them back in place.

“There are unique circumstances here it has to be said so it’s not akin to some of the issues reported recently regarding repeat pothole repairs.

“It is concerning, however, and I have reported the matter to the council’s Roads Maintenance Partnership seeking urgent repair.

“This is a heavily used road and on a major bus route so it is important it is brought up to standard as soon as possible.”

A Dundee City Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of the situation and the appropriate action will be taken.”
