Scottish football star Leigh Griffiths scored an own goal after being slapped with a parking ticket minutes before arriving at court to face a speeding charge.

The Celtic striker was due to face trial at Dundee Justice of the Peace Court on Monday after allegedly speeding at 62mph in a 50mph zone in Dundee last year.

A £30 council parking ticket was visible on the windscreen of the 27-year-old’s Range Rover as he arrived at court but the fine was all for nothing after the case was adjourned by JP Muhammad Khalid.

Depute fiscal Alan Kempton put forward a motion to adjourn after Griffiths’ solicitor dumped an 80-page document on his lap shortly before the case was due to be called.

This left Mr Kempton with no time to look over the evidence with JP Khalid agreeing that more time was needed to ensure a fair trial.

The 27-year-old is accused of driving his four-litre, 469 horsepower Mercedes AMG C63 at 62mph — 12mph over the limit — on June 3 2017 on the city’s Kingsway near to the Myrekirk roudabout.

He spoke only to confirm his name during a very brief appearance at the court, located on the city’s West Bell Street.

Griffiths will hope for two victories in the space of just a few days with his new court appearance falling on May 21, just two days after the Scottish Cup Final — which Celtic will expect to reach in their bid for a second successive treble.

One week after the speeding offence allegedly occurred, the former Dundee striker wrote his name into Scottish sporting folklore after scoring two sensational free kicks to put Scotland into a late lead against England in a World Cup qualifier at Hampden.

In a cruel end for Scotland however, Harry Kane popped up to equalise in the dying minutes with the game ending 2-2.
