A “violent” Dundee prisoner is currently on the loose after escaping contact while on home leave.

The public have been urged not to approach Castle Huntly prisoner Anthony McGinley, who was serving a nine-year prison term after carrying out a fatal knife attack in Glasgow in 2012.

The attack happened just weeks after he was released from a previous prison sentence.

McGinley is described as being 5ft 9, average build, with dark brown hair and green eyes. He is believed to have connections in Hamilton and the Castlemilk area of Glasgow.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “McGinley is known to be violent. If seen, he should not be approached and Police Scotland should be called on 101.

“Anyone wishing to provide information anonymously can do so through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

McGinley stabbed 25-year-old Darren Gavan after a confrontation in Castlemilk on 23 May 2012.

The attacked followed claims that Mr Gavan had smashed the windows of a car belonging to McGinley’s mother.

He was charged with murder but this was reduced to culpable homicide after his guilty was accepted by the Crown.

McGinley, who had also been jailed for 18 months for a 2008 attack, committed the 2012 knife attack just three weeks after serving time for a series of road traffic offences committed the previous year.
