Police are hunting for a balaclava clad man who attempted armed robbery on a Dundonald Street shop earlier this week.

The store was held up at knifepoint for the second time in six months on Wednesday at around 12.15pm.

Staff at General Stores were left “shaken” but unharmed following the incident, said to have been carried out by a man wearing a balaclava.

Police are also asking for drivers who use dashboard camera devices who were driving in the area at the time to contact them, as they might have usable evidence.

The man is described as being around 5 foot 6 inches tall, was wearing a grey tracksuit and balaclava.

He made his way towards Court Street following the bungled attempt at theft.

Nothing has been reported stolen to officers, however a door was damaged during the attempted robbery.

Detective Sergeant Kevin Mollison said :”We are keen to trace a man who is described as five feet six inches tall, wearing a dark hooded top, grey jogging bottoms, with dark trainers and dark balaclava. He was seen to run off in the direction of Court Street.

“Officers are currently reviewing CCTV footage of the surrounding area and I would ask members of the public who have private CCTV to come forward.

“I would also appeal to drivers who may have been the area and have dashcams fitted to their vehicles to also come forward.

“You might have captured information that may be useful to us.”
