Dundee’s annual celebrations for the end of Ramadan are set to be the biggest ever this year.
More than 1000 people are expected to attend Eid in the Park, which takes place on Sunday June 17 at Lochee Park.Â
It’s being organised by the Yusuf Youth Initiative, a city-based group which promotes pride in the community.
Eid (ul fitr) marks the end of Ramadan, the fasting month for Muslims which this year falls on either the Friday or Saturday before Eid in the Park.
Activities are open to everyone and feature a barbecue, food stalls, inflatable rides and sports challenges.
Faisal Hussein, CEO at YYI, said the popular event brings together people from all parts of the city’s community.
He said: “Last year brought together over 1000 people from over 15 nationalities and background to a day of fun, delicious food and entertainment.
“As soon as we put our first post out about this year we were overwhelmed with the excitement especially amongst our non-Muslim friends.
“It’s really heart warming to see so many people want to come together with the Muslims in Dundee and join in the Eid celebration.
“We have groups coming from Perth, Arbroath and even Glasgow.
“We are currently making final preparation with a number of young volunteers helping out on the day.
“As part of our celebrating the year of the young people we will be acknowledging them on the day as part of our ChangeMakers campaign.”
Ramadan is a challenging month for Muslims where an individual disciplines him/herself through fasting and getting rid of bad habits.
Many give up smoking in the month while others make a strong commitment to control their anger or use of foul language.
It’s considered a rehabilitation for the mind, body and soul.
Faisal added: “All donations raised on the day will help towards our YYI building appeal.
“The building will allow for the organisation to establish a permanent base for its activities and increase our contribution across the city.
“We look forward to seeing everyone there on the day.”
YYI’s Taught By Muhammad project
runs community support cafes for
residents in Douglas, Charleston, Kirkton and Fintry and operates a daily
foodbank service.
