VIDEO: Sun worshippers slammed for leaving yet another pile of rubbish in Broughty Ferry

Sun worshippers have been slammed for leaving a sea of detritus over a Dundee beauty spot on the hottest day of the year.

The grass surrounding Broughty Castle was covered in litter including disposable barbecues, plastic bags, cups and food wrappers.

Rubbish strewn on the grass at Broughty Ferry Castle.

Kevin Cordell, the convener of Dundee City Council’s neighbourhood services committee, said he could not understand why good weather makes people feel they no longer need to tidy up after themselves.

The SNP Ferry councillor said: “I find it difficult to understand why the hot weather brings out the worst in people who are quite happy to leave one of our most pleasant outdoor amenities in a mess.

Council forced to clean up after litter louts hit Broughty Ferry beach again

“It is so easy to put things in the many bins around that area, but instead this thoughtless action has resulted in council staff breaking off from their normal duties and making a special journey to clean it up, in time for what I hope will be a nice weekend so that other visitors can enjoy a litter free day out.

“There is adequate provision of well signed litter bins in the area that are regularly emptied — clear evidence that the culprits didn’t even attempt to put their debris in the right place.”

Mr Cordell added: “Once again I want to appeal to anyone who is outside enjoying our many attractive outdoor areas to do so responsibly and with some thought for other users and local people. Take pride in your city, put your litter in the bin or take it home with you.”

Online film-maker Jag Betty posted footage of the debris after visiting Castle Green late on Thursday evening, where he had been visiting the statue placed there for the Maggie’s Penguin Parade.

The footage left viewers dismayed.

Arthur Lamb said: “That mess is terrible, why would so many people leave the place in that state?

“They should be ashamed of themselves. The fact that visitors will be coming to see the penguin and see this mess.”

Similar messes were left in Broughty Ferry during hot weather in May.
