A man who battered his own mum with a banana has avoided a jail term.

Graeme Murray carried out the bizarre attack during an incident at his parents’ address in the Douglas area of Dundee in April.

Murray first shouted, swore, uttered threats of violence and banged on a fridge and a door during the row.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard that he then attacked his mother Doreen, 64, and pushed her against a worktop and grabbed her by the hair.

Murray then armed himself with a banana and repeatedly hit her on the head and body with it before throwing at her.

He also pushed her on to a bed during the attack, which left her with minor injuries.

Murray also assaulted his father, James, during the attack – seizing him by the head and repeatedly punching him to the head to his injury.

Police were called and Murray then attempted to headbutt PC Ryan Shields when he turned up to try and calm the situation.

Murray also admitted that on May 13 last year, at an address in Balunie Avenue, Dundee, Murray assaulted his 71-year-old father by heatbutting him to his injury.

Murray, 40, of Exchange Street, Dundee, pleaded guilty to charges of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner, two of assault and one of police assault committed on April 7 this year.

He also admitted a charge of assault from May 13 2017 and of driving whilst disqualified and attempting to pervert the course of justice in the Craigie area of Dundee on October 6 last year.

Sheriff George Way disqualified Murray from driving for four years on the driving whilst disqualified charges.

He deferred sentence on the other charges until November 9 for Murray to be of good behaviour.
