An army explosive ordnance disposal team was called to the scene.

Police said there was no risk to the public.

On Thursday afternoon Police Scotland’s Tayside Division said: “Police Scotland can confirm whilst searching a property at Carlochie Place in Dundee a device has been discovered.

“The EOD (explosive ordnance device disposal unit) have been informed and are enroute.

“A 100m cordon is in place and residents are in the process of evacuated as a precaution. There is no wider threat to the public.

“A man has been arrested and inquiries continuing.”

Local residents spoke of their bewilderment as events unfolded.

George Muir, who lives on Noran Avenue, said: “I hadn’t a clue what was going on. It’s totally bizarre to see all this.

“My neighbour was the first to tell me. She said we’re all blocked in.

“I’ve never seen anything like it. At first, I thought it was all blocked of because a large vehicle was due to come through.”
