Monikie woman to race in memory of Liam Colgan

Liam Colgan is missing in Germany.

An Angus woman is to compete in the Great Scottish Run in memory of a Dundee United fan who drowned while on her husband-to-be’s stag do in Germany.

Susan Dolan, 34, had been due to marry Eamonn Colgan before his brother Liam went missing in Hamburg on February 10.

The former Perth music student’s body was found 10 weeks later in the River Elbe.

Now Susan, from Monikie, is training to run the 10 kilometre Glasgow race in memory of Liam.

She will also be raising funds for a charity that helps families affected by crime overseas.

When Liam went missing, a friend came across the Lucie Blackman Trust and put the family in touch with them.

Susan said: “The moment we got in touch with the trust they couldn’t have been more helpful, nothing was too much for them. They helped us liaise with media and local authorities and helped us book flights and hotels so we could bring Liam’s body back to Scotland.

“I don’t know what we would have done without the support and help from the staff at the trust.”

Susan, who is a community staff nurse, is running with four friends and neighbours – Nicola MacQueen, Gemma White, Nicky Logue and Laura McGilvery.

She added: “We are all working out with a personal trainer twice a week to get us into the best possible shape with a mixture of circuit training and boot camp style exercises.

“Before we started training I couldn’t even run a mile but I have slowly been building up my runs to get my training to a good place.

“Liam wasn’t a keen runner at all but sometimes he would have sporadic bursts of doing exercise. He would be proud that I’ve managed to get myself to a level to complete the 10k.”
