A title winning boxer who traded heavyweight bouts in the ring with the court rooms of London will be a guest speaker at an upcoming charity dinner.
Top-ranking barrister Tony Kent is to speak at the Rotary Club of Dundee’s annual charity gala dinner, which is to be held next month.
The dinner is one of several charity events organised by the Rotarians throughout the year, with last year’s auction raising in excess of £20,000.
It will fall after the club’s biggest Oktoberfest, which will see Slessor Gardens transformed into a Bavarian beer market from September 27 to 29.
Organiser Clive Murray hopes that this year’s amount raised smashes last year’s total.
He said: “Over the course of last year, the club managed to raise more than £60,000 for good causes, both here and abroad.
“This included funding for Dundee Young Carers, providing shelter boxes for people afflicted by natural disasters and money to Syrian refugees living in Lebanon.
“This year’s dinner we hope will surpass the £20,000 raised at last year’s function.
“We have two very good, funny and insightful speakers who come from slightly different backgrounds to those who usually give after-dinner speeches.
“The dinner and auction will be fun, but will also give people a chance to support a lot of good causes.”
Tony Kent is a successful author and former champion boxer and is a regular at London’s Old Bailey, defending and prosecuting in a number of high profile criminal trials at one of the world’s oldest legal buildings.
The former Dundee University student boxed internationally prior to his studies, having grown up in a close-knit Irish family in the Old Smoke.
He won a host of national and international amateur titles before swapping his gloves with a short wig.
As well as his work inside the ring and court room, Mr Kent is also a published novelist.
In keeping with the auction’s judicial theme, the former governor of Castle Huntly Young Offenders Institution, Barlinnie prison and Cornton Vale woman’s prison, Robbie Glen, will also present an after dinner speech.
Wave FM breakfast presenter Erin Linton will host the evening as compere and once again Stephen Dewar, from Curr & Dewar auction house, will oversee the charity auction.
