Police caught more than 100 motorists illegally taking to two pedestrian-only streets in Dundee city centre in the space of just four hours on Monday.
Tayside Police Division stopped 104 vehicles passing through the zones on Commercial Street and Panmure Street between 1pm and 5pm.
Drivers were issued with antisocial behaviour warnings, meaning if they re-offend within the next 12 months they could have their vehicles “immediately seized”.
One motorist was charged with driving without a licence and another stopped by officers was wanted on warrant.
A statement from the force said: “The Dundee city centre policing team were out in the town yesterday afternoon enforcing the pedestrian zones in Commercial Street and Panmure Street at the McManus Galleries.
“In the four hour period between 1pm and 5pm, a total of 104 vehicles were stopped when illegally driving into the pedestrian zones.
“Drivers and their vehicles were issued with antisocial behaviour warnings and as such should they choose to further endanger pedestrians by re-offending over the next 12 months they risk having their vehicles immediately seized.
“In addition, officers dealt with one driver wanted on warrant who was also charged with possession of an offensive weapon. One driver was charged with driving with no license.
“Enforcement will continue with a view to protecting the public.
“A number of those stopped told officers that they took these “short cuts” daily, but would not do this anymore.
“Also, a number of people were following sat navs, rather than paying attention to signage.
“If anyone is in any doubt – signage is correct and should be followed. “I didn’t see the sign” is no excuse – if you’re driving with proper care and attention, you’ll see them.”
It added: “Antisocial behaviour warnings are exactly that – warnings. No fines or fees are incurred by the recipients unless they commit another relevant offence in the following 12 months.
“We sincerely hope that those drivers issued with these warnings yesterday heed them fully.”
