Braeview Academy fire: One of Dundee’s largest temporary classroom projects under way

Plans to get pupils back to the site of their fire-ravaged school by the end of the month are well under way.

One of the biggest temporary classroom projects ever mounted in Dundee is taking place at Braeview Academy, where more than 25 portable rooms are being built in the grounds of the school following September’s fire.

Firefighters tackle the Braeview Academy blaze.

Paul Clancy, executive director of the city council’s children and families service, announced last week that the aim is to get pupils back on to the site by November 30.

So far 10 of the classrooms have been built. They will eventually house classes including maths, English, science and drama, while other rooms will include a large dining area, staff room and ICT suites.

Currently pupils are being educated at Baldragon Academy and Craigie High School.

Mr Clancy praised the spirit of Braeview staff and students, as well as the workers trying to get the school back up and running.

He said: “This is one of the biggest portable set-ups we’ve had in Dundee.

“In previous cases we’ve only had to use a minimal amount of temporary accommodation.

“Workers have been laying soil pipes, individual toilets and installing all the tech that comes with the modern classroom.

“We are still aiming to get pupils and teachers back to Braeview by the end of this month, weather permitting of course,” he added.

“Within my time in the council this has been the biggest concerted effort to get something of this magnitude turned around in a matter of weeks.”
