A Dundee rum bar has been named the top one in Scotland at an event recognising the best in Scotland’s hospitality, food and drink sectors.

The King of Islington faced off against establishments from Edinburgh and Glasgow to be crowned the best of its kind in the country at the Scottish Licensed Trade News (SLTN) awards ceremony on Thursday night.

The Union Street venue specialises in sugarcane spirits sourced from Central and South American and is home to a selection of more than 120 rums.

The King of Islington receives the rum bar of the year accolade.

Comedian Sean Lock hosted the glamorous ceremony in the Glasgow Hilton, which recognises Scotland’s top pubs, clubs and restaurants. Some 700 people attended the ceremony.

Elsewhere the Penny Farthing in Kirkcaldy won the beer quality award while The Adamson in St Andrews was named boutique bar of the year.

SLTN editor Gillian McKenzie said: “Pubs, bars, restaurants, clubs and hotels play a vital role in Scotland – as the heartbeat of communities, in providing a warm welcome to tourists and as major employers, and their importance must not be overlooked.

“I’d like to congratulate all of our SLTN Award winners and highly commended finalists who deserve enormous credit for displaying the high standards, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit our industry is renowned for.”
