Military investigation after man seriously injured in Dundee pub fight is revealed as member of Royal Navy

Balcony Bar, Dundee.
Balcony Bar, Dundee.

It has been confirmed a man who suffered potentially life-changing injuries in a pub fight was a member of the Royal Navy.

The unnamed man suffered serious facial injuries in the incident at the Balcony Bar, in Dundee, at 2am on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old, who was in an altercation with another man, had been with four friends and the group had claimed they were Royal Marines.

A staff member who witnessed the fight said two men had argued, one of them who claimed to be a member of the infantry unit, and that they then shook hands.

They added the man who said he was a Royal Marine then headbutted the other man and injured himself in the process.

The fight was over in a couple of minutes and no-one else was involved although a group did gather round the injured man.

He was taken behind the bar by staff to wait for the emergency services and the recipient of the headbutt ran away.

Police Scotland arrived at the Ward Road pub to find the injured man with his face covered in blood.

He was taken to Ninewells Hospital for treatment.

A Royal Navy spokesman confirmed on Thursday  the injured man is a serving member of the armed forces.

The spokesman said: “We can confirm a member of the naval service was injured following an incident in Dundee.

“The incident is currently under investigation therefore it would be inappropriate to comment further

“Any other queries should be directed to Police Scotland.”

The military is carrying out its own investigation to uncover what happened.

A spokesman for the police said that enquiries were still ongoing into the fight.

Officers would like to trace the second man involved in the incident.

He is described as white, about 25 years old and 6ft tall with black hair and a long fringe. He was wearing a black long-sleeved shirt at the time.
