Vandals who started rubbish fire in Monifieth skate park criticised

A rubbish fire was started in a Monifieth skate park on Friday night

Firefighters had to battle a blazing pile of rubbish at a skate park.

Vandals are being blamed for setting light to the waste at Riverview Park, on Marine Drive, Monifieth.

No one was injured in the incident but locals have attacked the culprits for wasting the emergency services’ time and landing the council with the cost of repairing the damage.

The alarm was raised just before 10pm on Friday and fire crews took around 25 minutes to put out the blaze.

Angus Conservative councillor Craig Fotheringham, who represents the Monifieth and Sidlaw ward, said: “I certainly condemn this type of behaviour.

“Yet again it is a case of mindless vandals who are in the minority spoiling facilities for the majority.

“With council budgets already overstretched, this is an unnecessary cost to replace any damaged items.

“It is time some people had a sense of civic pride in their communities and thought about the inconvenience they are causing to the public and the emergency services. ”

Monifieth resident Lara Hall said the vandalism was “not acceptable”.

‘This is awful, can Angus Council please pay attention to the frequency of vandalism and look at lack of facilities too,” she said.

She added: “The kids hang about the streets of Monifieth as there are no community facilities in the town.

“With kids hanging about the park and beach at night time they will get up to mischief and it’s awful what the kids have done this time.”

Another local Marion Robertson branded the incident “disgusting” and said parents should pay more attention to what their children were getting up to in the evenings.

Fellow resident Crawford Robertson said that he feared burning bins and rubbish was just the start and that fire raisers might move onto play park equipment and even buildings as they gained confidence.

He said: “Once these kids get a feel for fire they become bolder and bolder, the only option is to come down hard and prosecute.”

A spokesman for Police Scotland said officers had yet to be informed of the fire.

It comes just weeks after fire crews had to tackle a number of fires at the derelict Strathmartine Hospital site, on the border of Dundee and Angus.

Police say those incidents are being treated as suspected wilful fire raising.
