Anger over ‘unfinished’ £70,000 Broughty Ferry outdoor games area

A Broughty Ferry councillor has voiced concerns about a £70,000 multi-use games area that remains unfinished, a year after it was unveiled.

The play area at Gillies Park was built thanks to fundraising efforts by the Barnhill Tenants’ and Residents’ Association.

It was installed in May last year. However, no lines have been painted on the games court, meaning children are unable to play any of the sports that the area was designed for.

Liberal Democrat councillor Craig Duncan is urging the council to get a move on and complete the work before the summer holidays begin and there is a surge in demand for the facilities.

He said: “I’m a bit disappointed about this brand new multi-use games area.

“Nobody has actually painted down the lines so people can make use of the different games.”

He said he had spoken to council officials and discovered there had been “a bit of a saga” behind the project.

“I’m advised by the council that the original contractors who were going to do it had not done it, for whatever reason,” said Mr Duncan.

“I was told the contract was then given to Tayside Contracts. I contacted them and they said they would be delighted to do it but had not actually received an order from the council.

“It’s now nearing summer, when the MUGA will be in use and it’s still effectively incomplete.

“It’s disappointing that the work isn’t further along and I would like to see it finished this summer as it’s a great facility.”

The games area is located on the site of the former tennis courts, on the south side of the park.

It was built after a two-year campaign by the Barnhill Tenants’ and Residents’ Association, who secured £70,000 of funding from the council’s neighbourhood services.

The area features a playground space for different activities, as well as basketball hoops and goal posts.

A Dundee City Council spokesman said the authority hoped to see progress in the near future, adding: “We are liaising with Tayside Contracts and work will be completed as soon as possible.”
