Headliner secured for first Hogmanay party in Dundee’s City Square in almost 20 years

A power pop group will play Dundee as a Hogmanay party returns to the City Square after an absence of almost two decades.

Squeeze are due to take to the stage at the New Year’s Eve bash in what will be the first event of its kind in the city since the Millennium celebrations.

Squeeze performs during BBC’s Biggest Weekend at Scone Palace.

The band are the first headliners to be confirmed for the event, with three more “big acts” due to be announced throughout the summer.

The event is being organised by GMC Ventures Ltd and promoter Michael Ward of EH6 Festival.

The Hogmanay Party will last two days, starting on Monday, December 30. Some 4,000 people are expected at the bash.

Squeeze singer-guitarist Glenn Tilbrook said: “I always love coming to Scotland. Being part of this celebration is an honour.”

Fellow band member Chris Difford added: “I love playing in Dundee, it’s such a young, vibrant city.”

Jill Gibson from GMC Ventures Ltd said: “It’s something I have always wanted to bring to Dundee. I always go everywhere else, Glasgow, Edinburgh, on Hogmanay because nothing usually happens in Dundee.

“All I used to see in Dundee on Hogmanay was a poor seagull flying over the City Square, nothing else going on, buses going off early and restaurants shutting. It’s like a ghost town and I think that’s wrong.

“My dad John and I started planning for this for last year’s Hogmanay but it was too soon and we decided it would be better to take some time and do it properly.

“So we have a brilliant line-up, there are four big acts which we will be announcing over the summer, starting with Squeeze on Monday, December 30.

“It’s really exciting and we’re all really happy that it’s finally going to happen and Dundee will have something to really celebrate bringing the New Year in.”

Tickets are due to go on sale on Friday, July 5.
