Three treated by paramedics as brave residents battle to put out Dundee blaze

Paramedics treated three people after a blaze forced the evacuation of a Dundee hostel on Wednesday afternoon.

Two female residents of the Transform Community Development (TCD) building on Soapwork Lane are said to have battled to put out the blaze themselves after spotting smoke coming from a first floor room on the site at about 3.30pm.

Firefighters, police and the Scottish Ambulance Service were called to the scene, with part of the road taped off as the incident was dealt with.

Residents were forced to flee after the building began to fill with smoke.

On arrival emergency teams had to search the property for one resident who was “unaccounted for”.

The person was traced and taken from the building in a stretcher before being treated by paramedics. The extent of their injuries is not known.

Two women, said to be the pair that initially fought to put out the blaze, were also treated at the scene. They are believed to have suffered smoke inhalation.

A burnt-out mattress and other blackened possessions were thrown from the window of the fire-hit room after firefighters arrived.

The room is said to have been unoccupied when the blaze broke out.

Scott Taylor, 27, stays in one of the neighbouring properties within the building.

He said: “I was coming down the stairs and heard the alarm. Smoke was billowing out the third floor and I ran down, came outside and a lassie was at the window. She was opening the window going ‘there is a fire, there is a fire’.

“She was trying to put it out. I think she did put it out. There will be smoke damage and all that, no doubt.”

The affected property is run by TCD – a Dundee charity that provides a resettlement service.

A fire and rescue spokeswoman said three appliances – one from Macalpine Road and two from Blackness – were called to the scene.

She added: “We got the call at 3.29pm. Three appliances were there. It was a first floor fire. Two residents were evacuated by the firefighters. One resident was still unaccounted for.

“Firefighters began searching and ventilating the property. The third person was removed.

“We were dampening down and cutting away within the fire flat. Three people were treated.

“The stop message came back at 4.02pm.”
