60ft ferris wheel to form centrepiece of Leven Christmas extravaganza this weekend

The Shorehead will be transformed.
The Shorehead will be transformed.

A 60ft ferris wheel with stunning views across the Forth will be the centrepiece of Leven’s first Christmas extravaganza in decades.

The three-day Fayre in the Square event has been organised by the Levenmouth Together group, established earlier this year to promote the area.

Local groups and stall holders will take over the Shorehead car park from Friday to Sunday, and food and drink will be on offer on each of the days.

Santa will also make an appearance and will be welcoming children to his grotto all weekend.

The festive celebration is the latest of several high-profile events arranged by Levenmouth Together in the past few months.

It follows a successful 10k run, an outdoor film festival and a food and drink festival, also at the Shorehead, which brought hundreds of people into Leven town centre in the summer.

Brian Robertson-Fern, chairman of the Levenmouth Together steering group, said the organisation had built on lessons from the food and drink festival and had upped its approach.

“The Fayre in the Square is much bigger and better and has a real family theme running through it,” he said.

“As well as a visit from Santa in his grotto we have our huge big wheel that we are bringing up from down south.

“We have also carefully selected a mixed range of stalls so there will genuinely be something for everyone, especially those looking for last minute gift ideas.”

The Shorehead events follow a £1 million town centre investment over the course of a year. Streets were repaved, better links were created with the nearby retail park and work was carried out to ensure the car park was capable of being used as a performance area.

Fife Council co-leader David Alexander said the success of the previous event and the ambition of this weekend’s celebrations had justified the expense.

“Everybody seems to be embracing what’s happening down there,” the SNP councillor said.

“The whole point of the money we spent was for this type of event. The more things we can do, the more people will come to the area.

“It’s all positive.”
