Congestion is building up on the diversions put in place for motorists affected by the closure of the Queensferry Crossing.

Traffic is said to be heavy on the A985 Kincardine to Rosyth road and the M90 Edinburgh to Perth road as drivers make the journey out of the capital city.

The northbound sections of the Kincardine and Clackmannanshire bridges are also said to be busy.

The Queensferry Crossing was shut in both directions due to falling ice on Monday evening after eight cars were left damaged. It came as much of Scotland was hit by freezing weather and heavy snow.

On Tuesday just before 4pm, Traffic Scotland said the northbound diversion route from Edinburgh via the A985 to junction three of the M90 is taking just shy of two hours. The route to Kinross is taking one hour and 50 minutes.

The 26-mile diversion via the M9, A985 and Kincardine Bridge was named as the main diversion route for people intending to use the Queensferry Crossing after the closure was announced.

Traffic Scotland tweeted: “Congestion now starting northbound at the A985 Kincardine and Clacks Bridges northbound.”

The Queensferry Crossing is expected to reopen on Wednesday, depending on the weather conditions.
