A police officer has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries following a crash on one of Fife’s busiest roads.

A force van was pulled over by the side of the A92 Cowdenbeath to Crossgates road when another vehicle crashed into it at about 1.50pm.

The force of the collision caused the police van to land in a ditch.

The incident took place east of Crossgates.

The police van was stationary at the time of the collision after pulling over to assist another vehicle.

The road has been closed westbound.

Scotland’s charity air ambulance was diverted to the scene and transported the injured officer to hospital.

Three fire and rescue appliances were also called to the scene of the crash – two from Lochgelly and one from Dunfermline.

A spokesman for the service said: “We received the call at 1.46pm from Police Scotland and mobilised three appliances. We received the stop message at 3.08pm.”

Police described the injuries as “serious”.

Officers later confirmed that the injuries are not life-threatening, but the man will remain in hospital.

A police tweet read: “The officer has been assessed & is thankfully not believed to have any life-threatening injuries. However, he remains in hospital for observations.

Thank you for all the supportive messages. Enquiries continue & anyone who witnessed this can call 101 and quote 1746 of 27 Feb.”

A police spokeswoman said: “The A92 has been closed westbound from Crossgates to Cowdenbeath due to a serious crash involving two vehicles, which happened around 1.40pm today.

“Diversions are in place and motorists are asked to avoid the area.

“The crash involved a transporter and a police vehicle.

“The police vehicle had been stationary and assisting a vehicle which had stopped. One officer has been airlifted to hospital with what are believed to be serious injuries and the A92 westbound remains closed.”

Drivers have been told to avoid the A92.

Traffic Scotland posted: “The A92 is closed to southbound traffic at Cowdenbeath due to a road traffic accident.

“Motorists are advised to use an alternative route at this time.”
