Fife village pub’s £2 a pint offer to drink the place dry before closure

A popular Fife pub has given locals a much-needed boost amid the coronavirus chaos by offering cut price pints, just hours before being forced to close its doors until further notice.

Proprietors of The Guardbridge Inn, a real focal point for the close-knit Fife village, confirmed that Thursday evening would mark the pub’s last service for the time being, and thanked staff and the pub’s regulars for their support in extremely difficult times.

But with beer still in the lines to use up, the pub is offering thirsty locals the chance to pop down and grab a bargain by offering all draughts for just £2 until the wells have run dry.

Claire Trimble, a partner and chef at The Guardbridge Inn, sincerely hopes the final service will not be the pub’s last hurrah, but admits the last few weeks have proved tough for everyone concerned.

“It’s been awful, it’s been really hard,” she said.

“I think we’ve been getting quieter as the outbreak was getting worse, but once people have been told to stay away it’s really like the final nail in the coffin.

“The government hasn’t shut the pubs down, but they’ve told people not to come in, so there’s not a lot we can do really.

“We just really need to close as quickly as possible so that we can actually reopen again if and when we come out the other side of this.

“We don’t want to be in a position where that isn’t the case.”

Claire’s comments came after posting a heartfelt message on The Guardbridge Inn’s Facebook page, confirming that the pub was having to close with a “heavy heart”.

“In this period of uncertainty we would like to thank you for your support and most of all, our team,” the post read.

“We have spent more time with them than our families over the last seven years and this decision has been awful for us.

“We will keep you posted for our return when this is all over.”
