A Fife cancer charity is searching for a kind-hearted business willing to shell out for 1,000 knitted Easter chicks filled with crème eggs because of the coronavirus lockdown.

Volunteers from the Made For Maggies group have spent the last two months, with the help of friends, family and work colleagues, frantically knitting chicks for the charity’s annual fundraiser.

A record haul of around 2,000 covered crème eggs was donated by knitters including local Army Cadets groups and Kinglassie based charity Kats Mission, but the lockdown has left the group unable to sell them.

With Easter lest than two weeks away, volunteers have now launched an urgent appeal to find a buyer to step in and rescue their efforts.

“We are hoping a Fife business or organisation will be willing to buy the eggs in bulk, maybe to give to their staff or sell on,” said Made For Maggies volunteer Lynn Wilson.

An appeal has been launched to find a taker for the remaining chicks.

“Because of the coronavirus lockdown, most of the shops or events that we normally sell the eggs at are either closed or cancelled, leaving one of our volunteers with a living room full of knitted chicks.”

She said Nisa and David’s Kitchen convenience stores had recently agreed to try to sell some and Collydean Community Centre had agreed to take a further 100, but the group desperately needed others to help out.

“We normally have no bother selling the chicks for £1.50 each but because of the unprecedented situation which the coronavirus crisis has left us we have agreed to sell them for £1 each just so we can recuperate something for such a fantastic cause as Maggies,” said Lynn.

“Maybe there’s big-hearted business owner out there that would like to purchase some for their hard-working employees or shop that’s still open that could sell the chicks.

“We just need someone to come forward, it would be such a shame to see all that wonderful effort that went into creating the chicks in the first place, go to waste.”

Anyone wishing to take a consignment of Easter chick eggs can do so by contacting Lynn on 07708 267600.
