Coronavirus: Staffie Lula’s daily walkies just the trick for lockdown cheer

Lula the lovable Staffie has been cheering up people on her daily walks in Rosyth.

The five-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier performs tricks for those she passes, from elderly people out walking in the park to children watching from their windows.

Her exploits are also raising money for CHAS, as owner Sarah Johnston, a trust fundraiser for the children’s hospice charity, has been collecting donations online.

Rescue dog Lula has been well-trained by Sarah and is able to ‘sit pretty’ with her front paws lifted, weave between Sarah’s legs, jump railings and play target practice by touching Sarah’s hand with her nose.

Sarah said: “I got the idea after taking Lula out for our first proper walk in nearly two weeks due to self-isolating after having flu symptoms.”

As Lula passed by in her rainbow harness, a little girl on a tricycle was excited to spot her.

Sarah, 36, said: “I waved and said hello to her and her mum at a distance and then made her laugh by doing tricks with Lula.”

The pair have been together for two-and-a-half years, after Lula was found abandoned in a street in Edinburgh.

Sarah keeps the energetic canine active physically and mental with long walks and regular training sessions using techniques learned from YouTube.

She said: “She’s quite an excitable dog and she loves meeting people so much.”

Although Sarah originally set out to entertain children off school, Lula’s lockdown antics have been a hit with young and old alike.

Sarah said: “Older people have really enjoyed it, and it’s a nice way to exchange a few words at a distance.

“Lula absolutely loves it, you can see her grinning from ear to ear, her big Staffie grin.”

Sarah posts details of their daily 1pm walks on the Facebook page Lunch Time with Lula.
