Fife’s top pharmacist has urged the public not to stockpile medicines during the coronavirus crisis.
NHS Fife’s director of pharmacy Scott Garden said by only ordering what is needed, patients can play their part in helping to protect pharmacy supplies during the pandemic.
He said: “Local pharmacies are relied upon and have a crucial role to play in our response to coronavirus here in Fife.
“Over the last few weeks they have been even busier than usual and we ask for continued patience and understanding from the local population as they manage that the increased demand safely and appropriately.
“While we appreciate the level of anxiety brought on by Covid-19, it’s important that people do not attempt to stockpile medicines and order in a similar way as they would usually, by only ordering the medicines they need. This allows us to maintain sufficient stocks for all of those who may require it.”
NHS Fife said there were no issues with the supply of medicines and reminded patients to ask for repeat prescriptions as they normally would.
However, increased demand has led to some prescriptions taking longer than usual to be processed.
Across Fife some pharmacies are operating reduced opening hours.
NHS Inform has a complete list of local pharmacies on its website, where people can search for the nearest pharmacy if their usual one is temporarily closed.
Anyone with symptoms consistent with Covid-19, such as a high temperature or new continuous cough, should not visit their local pharmacy.
And anyone with flu-like symptoms or who feels generally unwell is asked to stay at home.
