Half-finished £25m Fife golf course development near St Andrews goes up for sale

A partially-formed golf course on the edge of St Andrews has been put up for sale.

Work to create the Feddinch Club course designed by former Open champion Tom Weiskopf ground to a halt in 2014.

The exclusive £25 million club at Feddinch Mains was to include a clubhouse with 41 luxury apartments and a restaurant.

But the site of the abandoned 18-hole course has lain incomplete and is now on the market.

The selling agent said there was scope for a new owner to continue the development, create another commercial or tourism-related venture or return it to agricultural use.

Planning permission was originally granted for the private members’ course with a 40-bedroom clubhouse in 2004.

The course was shaped, with tees and greens levelled and bunkers excavated, before work stopped. The move was blamed on bad weather and the prolonged ill health of the project’s director.

Consent for the clubhouse for Scotia Investments was renewed in January 2017, with the caveat that it would lapse in three years if construction had not started.

Galbraith, which is marketing the 240-acres of land just two miles south-west of St Andrews, said the sale was an “outstanding proposition”.

The site includes a semi-derelict farmhouse and steading.

Agent George Lorimer said: “Subject to planning there is potentially scope for a purchaser to continue with the development and create a superb new course with some lovely coastal views with the benefit of a fantastic unrivalled location.

“The site also has excellent potential for a variety of other commercial uses, subject to planning permission, and is only 10 minutes by car to St Andrews and the glorious Fife coast.

“The purchaser could potentially put their own stamp on the property and take advantage of its excellent location to create a premium tourism-related business.”

A progress update in 2018 suggested much of the rough shaping of the course had been completed, with work concentrated on improving site boundary walls and directing surface water into newly created culverts and wetlands in out-of-play areas to enhance bio diversity.

The formal opening of the club had been estimated for spring 2021, so any potential buyer looking to complete the project might be in a place to benefit from St Andrews’ hosting The Open Championship in 2022.

According to the original designs, unusual features included a large double green for the 9th and 18th holes immediately in front of the clubhouse.
