Police have closed the road and traffic has been diverted.

Sergeant Nicola Young, from Police Scotland, told The Courier: “Following the accident which involved a white Volkswagen Golf GTI at around 3am this morning, sadly we can now confirm that there have been two fatalities and that next of kin have been informed.

“We are still trying to ascertain how many vehicles were involved but we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

“Because of the impact to the building and the significant damage, an emergency structural survey needs to be carried out and therefore the road will remain closed until that has been carried out, which may be some time.

“As you can appreciate, the investigation is at a very early stage and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the accident or saw a white Golf GTI being driven prior to the incident to contact police.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said both victims were in their 20s.

She said: “We were called to a report of a car colliding with a building on the Windygates Road, Leven, around 3am on Friday July 17.

“Emergency services attended and two men, aged 27 and 29, were pronounced dead at the scene.

“The road is currently closed while officers are carrying out enquiries into the circumstances of the crash.”

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said they had assisted during the incident.

She said: “We were called to a building fire Barron Terrace at 3.04am. A car had struck the building.”
