Friends and family of a Fife teenager who passed away after a tragic car accident in the Highlands have raised thousands of pounds towards her funeral.
Amy Simpson, 18, from Cowdenbeath, died when her Peugeot plunged into the River Avich near Dalavich in Argyll on April 12, while her four friends managed to escape with minor cuts and bruises.
Her death has shocked those who knew and loved her, but scores of people have rallied around to help give her a fitting send-off at Dunfermline Crematorium next week.
A crowdfunding page set up by Amy’s auntie Lucy McGrother in the young student’s honour has certainly captured the imagination, with the total figure raised in the space of just a few days approaching the £6,000 mark.
Any money left after paying for funeral costs will be given to the SSPCA, as would have been Amy’s wishes.
“Our niece, Amy, was taken from us in a terrible car accident, leaving behind so many people whose hearts are breaking,” Lucy’s fundraising page said, going on to describe the support shown as “truly amazing”.
“She was only 18 but will be remembered by all for her gentleness, genuine warmth and most of all that contagious smile.”
Amy’s mum Angela has also thanked members of the public for their support via social media, and released a statement through police to pay tribute to her “perfect daughter”.
An initial target of £4,000 was smashed, thanks to the generosity of more than 250 people who had been touched by Amy over the years.
Friends from the Edinburgh University, where Amy studied maths, and her workmates at McDonald’s restaurant have been among those giving donations.
A significant amount has also come from various departments at Beath High School, where Amy was a pupil.
Douglas Young, rector at Beath High School, said: “Everyone at Beath was shocked and saddened at this tragic news.
“Our thoughts are with all of Amy’s family and friends at this very difficult time.
“Amy was an amazing and talented pupil who was an absolute pleasure to work with.
“She was a credit to her family and to the school.
“It speaks volumes that a significant number of my colleagues at Beath have chosen to donate to a fundraising website.”
Amy’s funeral will take place at Dunfermline Crematorium on Tuesday at 2.45pm.
