Members of the public have been assured that there is no risk to them or the environment following a massive tyre fire in Fife on Sunday night.
Smoke billowing from the blaze at the Coaltown of Balgonie bing could be seen for miles around, with people as far as Angus in the north and Edinburgh and the Lothians in the south seeing the black plume.
A full investigation has been launched after the pile of tyres, said to measure 40 metres by 20 metres, appears to have been deliberately set alight.
Local councillor Ross Vettraino, who has a background in environmental health, said he had since spoken to SEPA and had been reassured about public safety, with SEPA confirming that they were also probing the matter to see if any regulations had been breached.
Reports of the fire first surfaced just before 7.30pm on Sunday and crews on the ground radioed for more help when the scale of the blaze became apparent.
Fire appliances from Glenrothes, Methil, Kirkcaldy and Lochgelly were all involved during the height of the incident, with relief teams taking over as the night progressed.
The emergency was declared over at around 11.45pm, but crews remained behind to dampen down affected areas in the early hours of the morning.
Nobody was hurt in the incident.
