Three people at Fife College test positive for Covid-19 as confirmed cases at St Andrews University rise to 34

A further nine cases of Covid-19 have been identified at St Andrews University.

A total of 34 students and staff linked to the university have now tested positive for the virus since September 1.

Three cases have also been identified in people with links to Fife College.

NHS Fife said that while there is evidence of a potential link between some of the St Andrews cases, the figure also includes some sporadic cases as a result of prolonged close contact with people outwith Fife.

Its health protection team is working closely with the university to prevent further infection and mitigate the effect of any positive cases that do occur.

A spokesperson said: “While we are aware of limited student-to-student transfer of the virus in some areas, there is no evidence of widespread transmission within the university or indeed the wider community at this stage. “

The spokesman said there was a potential link between two of the three Fife College cases but no evidence of wider transmission between the college.

The risk to students and staff appears to be low, they added.

Contact tracers are working to identify and trace the known contacts of the positive cases so they can be instructed to self-isolate to prevent onward spread of the virus.

A local online support hub has been created at coronavirus.nhsfife.org/ to provide information on testing for COVID-19, and updates on the pandemic.
