Work has begun on a groundbreaking care village and nursery in Levenmouth.

The £10.5 million development in Methil, delayed slightly due to lockdown, will bring together the oldest and youngest in society in what is believed to be the first local authority project of its type in Scotland.

It will see 36-bedroom residential care home, 35 residential care units and a children’s nursery created on the same site, along with a community cafe and district heating network.

The scheme, on the site of the former Kirkland High School, will replace the current Methilhaven residential home.

SNP councillor Ken Caldwell, convener of Levenmouth area committee, said he was delighted the work was finally under way.

“I’m pleased to see that the new Kirkland Care Village has now started, following slight delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.

“As area convener, this is a project that I have followed closely and supported.

“This is another first for Levenmouth, by combining a care home with an integrated, intergenerational nursery in the same building, along with much needed housing.

“It’s been a fantastic month for Levenmouth, with the opening of Silverburn Park camping and motorhome site and the start of works to clear the site of the Leven to Thornton rail link.”
